iotheatre productions basics: characters

All stories revolve around the development of characters. In all theatrical productions, these are broken into three types: leading characters, supporting characters, and extras. Leading characters are those that the story revolves around, supporting characters spur transformation in the leading characters, and extras help establish and maintain the production atmosphere.

Unlike traditional productions in which leading characters follow a script, iot performers conceptualize their own leading characters and improvise based on the motivations they establish. Supporting characters and extras are created by iot and, while their performance is improvised, iot sets their major motivations as well. Though the opportunity to create and play a leading character is part of what makes iot productions exciting, all three types of characters are vital to the story and are open to performers under different circumstances unique to each production.
